A New Monte Carlo Algorithm for Protein Folding
We demonstrate that the recently proposed pruned-enriched Rosenbluth method
(P. Grassberger, Phys. Rev. E 56 (1997) 3682) leads to extremely efficient
algorithms for the folding of simple model proteins. We test them on several
models for lattice heteropolymers, and compare to published Monte Carlo
studies. In all cases our algorithms are faster than all previous ones, and in
several cases we find new minimal energy states. In addition to ground states,

Generation and Differentiation of Adult Tissue-Derived Human Thyroid Organoids
Total thyroidectomy as part of thyroid cancer treatment results in hypothyroidism requiring lifelong daily thyroid hormone replacement. Unbalanced hormone levels result in persistent complaints such as fatigue, constipation, and weight increase. Therefore, we aimed to investigate a patient-derived thyroid organoid model with the potential to regenerate the thyroid gland. Murine and human thyroidderived cells were cultured as organoids capable of self-renewal and which expressed proliferation and putative stem cell and thyroid characteristics, without a change in the expression of thyroid tumor-related genes. These organoids formed thyroid-tissue-resembling structures in culture. (Xeno-)transplantation of 600,000 dispersed organoid cells underneath the kidney capsule of a hypothyroid mouse model resulted in the generation of hormone-producing thyroid-resembling follicles. This study provides evidence that thyroid-lineagespecific cells can form organoids that are able to self-renew and differentiate into functional thyroid tissue. Subsequent (xeno-)transplantation of these thyroid organoids demonstrates a proof of principle for functional miniature gland formation
Endemicity of Zoonotic Diseases in Pigs and Humans in Lowland and Upland Lao PDR: Identification of Socio-cultural Risk Factors
In Lao People's Democratic Republic pigs are kept in close contact with families. Human risk of infection with pig zoonoses arises from direct contact and consumption of unsafe pig products. This cross-sectional study was conducted in Luang Prabang (north) and Savannakhet (central-south) Provinces. A total of 59 villages, 895 humans and 647 pigs were sampled and serologically tested for zoonotic pathogens including: hepatitis E virus (HEV), Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) and Trichinella spiralis; In addition, human sera were tested for Taenia spp. and cysticercosis. Seroprevalence of zoonotic pathogens in humans was high for HEV (Luang Prabang: 48.6%, Savannakhet: 77.7%) and T. spiralis (Luang Prabang: 59.0%, Savannakhet: 40.5%), and lower for JEV (around 5%), Taenia spp. (around 3%) and cysticercosis (Luang Prabang: 6.1, Savannakhet 1.5%). Multiple correspondence analysis and hierarchical clustering of principal components was performed on descriptive data of human hygiene practices, contact with pigs and consumption of pork products. Three clusters were identified: Cluster 1 had low pig contact and good hygiene practices, but had higher risk of T. spiralis. Most people in cluster 2 were involved in pig slaughter (83.7%), handled raw meat or offal (99.4%) and consumed raw pigs' blood (76.4%). Compared to cluster 1, cluster 2 had increased odds of testing seropositive for HEV and JEV. Cluster 3 had the lowest sanitation access and had the highest risk of HEV, cysticercosis and Taenia spp. Farmers which kept their pigs tethered (as opposed to penned) and disposed of manure in water sources had 0.85 (95% CI: 0.18 to 0.91) and 2.39 (95% CI: 1.07 to 5.34) times the odds of having pigs test seropositive for HEV, respectively. The results have been used to identify entry-points for intervention and management strategies to reduce disease exposure in humans and pigs, informing control activities in a cysticercosis hyper-endemic village
RXTE Discovery of Multiple Cyclotron Lines during the 2004 December Outburst of V0332+53
We present an analysis of the 2-150 keV spectrum of the transient X-ray
pulsar V0332+53 taken with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) in 2004
December. We report on the detection of three cyclotron resonance features at
27, 51, and 74 keV in the phase-averaged data, corresponding to a polar
magnetic field of 2.7 x 10^12 G. After 4U0115+63, this makes V0332+53 the
second accreting neutron star in which more than two cyclotron lines have been
detected; this has now also been confirmed by INTEGRAL. Pulse-phase
spectroscopy reveals remarkably little variability of the cyclotron line

The Shapes of Cooperatively Rearranging Regions in Glass Forming Liquids
The shapes of cooperatively rearranging regions in glassy liquids change from
being compact at low temperatures to fractal or ``stringy'' as the dynamical
crossover temperature from activated to collisional transport is approached
from below. We present a quantitative microscopic treatment of this change of
morphology within the framework of the random first order transition theory of
glasses. We predict a correlation of the ratio of the dynamical crossover
temperature to the laboratory glass transition temperature, and the heat
capacity discontinuity at the glass transition, Delta C_p. The predicted
correlation agrees with experimental results for the 21 materials compiled by
Novikov and Sokolov.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure
All-sky search for time-integrated neutrino emission from astrophysical sources with 7 years of IceCube data
Since the recent detection of an astrophysical flux of high energy neutrinos,
the question of its origin has not yet fully been answered. Much of what is
known about this flux comes from a small event sample of high neutrino purity,
good energy resolution, but large angular uncertainties. In searches for
point-like sources, on the other hand, the best performance is given by using
large statistics and good angular reconstructions. Track-like muon events
produced in neutrino interactions satisfy these requirements. We present here
the results of searches for point-like sources with neutrinos using data
acquired by the IceCube detector over seven years from 2008--2015. The
discovery potential of the analysis in the northern sky is now significantly
below , on average
lower than the sensitivity of the previously published analysis of four
years exposure. No significant clustering of neutrinos above background
expectation was observed, and implications for prominent neutrino source

A review of Monte Carlo simulations of polymers with PERM
In this review, we describe applications of the pruned-enriched Rosenbluth
method (PERM), a sequential Monte Carlo algorithm with resampling, to various
problems in polymer physics. PERM produces samples according to any given
prescribed weight distribution, by growing configurations step by step with
controlled bias, and correcting "bad" configurations by "population control".
The latter is implemented, in contrast to other population based algorithms
like e.g. genetic algorithms, by depth-first recursion which avoids storing all
members of the population at the same time in computer memory. The problems we
discuss all concern single polymers (with one exception), but under various
conditions: Homopolymers in good solvents and at the point, semi-stiff
polymers, polymers in confining geometries, stretched polymers undergoing a
forced globule-linear transition, star polymers, bottle brushes, lattice
animals as a model for randomly branched polymers, DNA melting, and finally --
as the only system at low temperatures, lattice heteropolymers as simple models
for protein folding. PERM is for some of these problems the method of choice,
but it can also fail. We discuss how to recognize when a result is reliable,
and we discuss also some types of bias that can be crucial in guiding the

The contribution of Fermi-2LAC blazars to the diffuse TeV-PeV neutrino flux
The recent discovery of a diffuse cosmic neutrino flux extending up to PeV
energies raises the question of which astrophysical sources generate this
signal. One class of extragalactic sources which may produce such high-energy
neutrinos are blazars. We present a likelihood analysis searching for
cumulative neutrino emission from blazars in the 2nd Fermi-LAT AGN catalogue
(2LAC) using an IceCube neutrino dataset 2009-12 which was optimised for the
detection of individual sources. In contrast to previous searches with IceCube,
the populations investigated contain up to hundreds of sources, the largest one
being the entire blazar sample in the 2LAC catalogue. No significant excess is
observed and upper limits for the cumulative flux from these populations are
obtained. These constrain the maximum contribution of the 2LAC blazars to the
observed astrophysical neutrino flux to be or less between around 10
TeV and 2 PeV, assuming equipartition of flavours at Earth and a single
power-law spectrum with a spectral index of . We can still exclude that
the 2LAC blazars (and sub-populations) emit more than of the observed
neutrinos up to a spectral index as hard as in the same energy range.
Our result takes into account that the neutrino source count distribution is
unknown, and it does not assume strict proportionality of the neutrino flux to
the measured 2LAC -ray signal for each source. Additionally, we
